During my quiet time with God this morning I was reading Matthew 4, and in verses 4, 7 & 10, Jesus responds to Satan’s testing with “it is written”, I recently saw a video that put this in perspective.
Why didn’t Jesus use His power to cast Satan away? Because I don’t have the power to cast Satan away from me!
Why didn’t Jesus use His authority to call on an army of Angels to chase Satan away? Because I don’t have the authority to call on an army of Angels.
Why did Jesus use scripture to defeat the Devil? Because I can use scripture to defeat the Devil!
Jesus was showing us, how as humans we can defeat the Devil and his lies, but to do so, we need to be men and women of the Word. We need to know scripture and harness the power of the Word, when Satan starts whispering his lies, we need to be prepared.
When Satan starts whispering, “You’re not really saved”! We need to hit him with Romans 10:13 – “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
When Satan starts whispering that, “You should really be worried about this or anxious about that”! We need to smack him with Philippians 4:6-7 – Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
When Satan starts whispering that “They don’t deserve your forgiveness”! Punch him right in the mouth with Matthew 6:14 – For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
And When Satan starts telling you the lie that “Do you see that person, they’re not quite right, you should avoid them”! Body slam him with Luke 6:37-38 – “Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Give and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”
Satan is called the father of lies, the great deceiver, the accuser and tempter for a reason, and unarmed we will fall in to his traps, but armed with the sword of the spirit which is the Word of God we can defend ourselves from his lies and the havoc they cause in our lives.
So the next time you hear that old familiar “You’re not good enough” in your head, just remind yourself and Satan that we are children of God, For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. – Romans 8:14-16
