The death of Rick and Kay Warren’s son brought up a lot of emotions, memories and questions for me, my brother committed suicide a little over 12 years ago. I can remember the day like it was yesterday, where I was, what was going on, the feelings, the numbness, the confusion, the emptiness, I can remember everything about that day!

It also brings up the biggest fear and of all, can you go to Heaven if you take your own life? I think about this a lot, will I see my brother on the other side? Actually, will I see my brother’s on the other side, they both killed themselves, one took his life one day by hanging himself, the other took his life over 20 years of gulping gin and destroying his liver by the time he was 46. Both of my brothers died at 46, 2 years apart and 12 years later I turned 47, I guess that means I won. But I digress, so if we commit suicide do you get to go to Heaven?

I’ve heard a lot of people say answer is no, if you take your life you go to hell, to those people I ask the following questions:

1. How do you know the condition of the heart at the very moment of death?
2. How do you know their relationship with the One that can forgive anyone of anything at their moment of death?
3. Do we have to pay for, answer for, those things that were done when we didn’t have control over our minds because of depression, mental disorders, or temporary lapse of mental faculties?

While I’ve heard some decent arguments both ways, I know that there is only One that truly knows the answer and that I will have to wait to find out if I am right or if all of the “religious legalists” got it right. But as for me, I believe that the Grace that my Savior showed the thief on the cross (who knew what he did, could and would cost him his life if he was caught) could and may have been granted to others who may or may not have known what they were doing. We will know some day until then I have faith!
